Transportation Education Workshop Series offered by Michigan Tech University
Spring 2013 ~ Transportation in the 21st Century: Moving People & the Stuff We Buy

For:  Middle/High School Social Studies, Math & Science teachers

Purpose: to provide teachers with curricular resources for integrating transportation into core subject areas (math, science, social studies, technology), and future careers in transportation.

Location:  PACE Learning Center, Room 2507 Engineering Building, Wayne State University, 5050 Anthony Wayne Drive, Detroit, MI 48202. (Participants will receive parking passes to park behind the building).

Cost: $50* BY MARCH 20, 2013. EARN $100 FOR SUBMITTING 1 TRANSPORTATION leSSON

Credit: 1 graduate credit (ED5680) through Michigan Technological University or SCECHs. To earn credit, teachers attend 3 workshops and develop one lesson plan.

Workshop Topics/Dates for Spring 2013 – All are 6-hour workshops
(1) March 23 ~ Intermodal & Rail Transportation – Dr. Pasi Lautala, Director, Rail Transportation Program, Michigan Technological University. Topics:  Overview of different transportation modes for moving freight and people, rail transportation in the U.S. and Michigan, including the new high speed rail for Detroit-Chicago corridor; highlights of new technology in rail transportation. Includes passenger and freight rail visits.

 (2) April 20 ~ Traffic Operations & SafetyDr. Peter Savolainen, Dept. of  Civil and Environmental Engineering, Wayne State University. Topics: This workshop will focus on hot topics in transportation engineering and how they may be integrated into the STEM curriculum, such as: how drivers contribute to traffic crashes and affect the design of traffic signals.  Participants will visit the SE Michigan Transportation Operations Center (SEMTOC) to see how engineers manage the operation of the transportation system in real-time.

(3) May 11 ~ Maritime Transportation - Rick Brown, Licensed Captain, The Maritime Academy of Toledo and Dr. Pete Lindquist, Dept. of Geography & Planning, Univ. of Toledo. Topics: Maritime ship cargoes & products, Upper Midwest Freight Corridor & Freight Movement, navigation, maritime careers.

*Cost has been reduced through the generous support of the MTU Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering that  helps to reduce official MTU tuition (2012/13 Official Applied Science Education Graduate Resident and Non-Resident @ $485 per credit).
