The Portage Lake District Library will launch the fourth in a series of SIX programs about Michigan Forests on Monday, April 21. All are invited to attend “Birds of the North Woods” from 6:30-8:00 pm in the community room of the library.
Michigan's Upper Peninsula has more breeding birds than almost any other part of the U.S! Ornithologist and special guest, David Flaspohler, from MTU’s School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science, will explain why and describe the diverse breeding birds of Upper Peninsula forests. His talk will highlight some of the most common forest birds and how you can identify them by sight and song.
Following the presentation, families will have the opportunity to participate in several hands-on activities. Participants will dissect REAL owl pellets to discover what owls eat, learn to ID birds by sight and song, design their own bird, build a nest just like a real bird, and play fill the bill -- find out why there are so many different shaped beaks!
