 Grades 1-3:  Investigate Your World!

Students will conduct science experiments, solve engineering challenges, and enjoy making new discoveries!

Topics & activity possibilities:

  • Bird brains and beaks: What is it like to be a bird?
  • How do deer, moose, and wolves adapt to their environment?
  • Outdoor activities 
  • Guest presenters — university faculty & students. Meet an Isle Royale Ranger!

Explore what Michigan Tech has to offer, visiting labs & classrooms across campus to learn about some really cool stuff!

After School & Out-of-School Time Classes offered at MTUís Great Lakes Research Center

The Western UP Center for Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education coordinates six-week After School Science, Engineering, Technology and Environmental Education Classes taught by Michigan Tech University students, graduates, and Center staff, in addition to offering a 3-day Spring Break Camp and Summer Camps. The classes provide fun, hands-on, inquiry-based activities for students in grades 1-8 and connect to Michigan Content Standards for math and science.

The Western UP Center for Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education coordinates six-week After School Science Classes taught by Michigan Tech University students majoring in science and engineering. The After-School classes provide fun, hands-on, inquiry-based activities for students in grades 1-8 during three sessions of the school year: fall, winter, and spring. The Center develops the curricula so that all activities connect to Michigan Content Standards for math and science, provides activity kits for each lesson, and recruits and trains the MTU students.
