Service Learning                                                                                            Grades K-12

Instructor:               Debra Wagner, Ionia ISD

Location:                 Copper Country ISD Distance Learning Room

Registration fee:      Free to all teachers in the CCISD, registration fee covered by a Service Learning Grant.

 

Interactive videoconference where teachers will explore service learning and how to effectively implement a service learning project in their classrooms. Examples of service learning projects will be provided to teachers to help foster creative ideas for classroom projects related to the community land use and environmental stewardship. Limited to 30 participants.

 

Stream Tables, Microorganisms & Water Quality Treatment                                  Grades 5-12

Instructor:               Joan Chadde (Western UP Center), Dr. Sue Bagley (MTU), Dr. Marty Auer (MTU), Kathy Makela (Wakefield Elementary)

Location:                 MTU Memorial Ballroom B

During the morning, teachers will investigate the physical characteristics of streams and how slope, velocity, and streamside land uses can impact the water quality of streams. In the afternoon, teachers will explore the role of bacteria and microorganisms in aquatic ecosystems with MTU’s Dr. Sue Bagley, and learn how to test for microorganisms in water. Lastly, teachers will visit a wastewater treatment plant with MTU’s Dr. Marty Auer and determine whether the discharged wastewater really is “clean?” Topics will connect to Life Science, Geosphere and Hydrosphere benchmarks.

 

Outdoor Inquiry Investigations for Elementary. Students                                              Grades K-3

Location:                 C.J. Sullivan Elementary Cafeteria (L’Anse)

This session will focus on providing a framework for guiding "inquiry-based learning" to young learners, while making connections between the classroom and the winter wonderland we are surrounded by.  Come prepared to venture outdoors on snowshoes provided by us (or bring your own) as we explore snow and how various plants and animals survive the winter.  The all-day workshop will be closely connected to the Michigan Curriculum Framework Science Standards for Constructing and Reflecting Science.

 

Creative Ways to Teach Probability, Statistics and Data Analysis                Grades 5-9

Instructor:               Shawn Oppliger, Western UP Center

Location:                 MTU Memorial  Ballroom A

Registration Fee:     $20

 

Teachers will explore hands-on activities from AIMS (Activities that Integrate Math and Science) and GEMS (Great Explorations in Math and Science) to teach probability, statistics and data analysis.  All participants will receive a notebook of activities.

Want Good Health? Education Works!                                                         Grades K-12

Fee:                         Free to all teachers in the CCISD. Registration fee covered by National Institute of Health Grant

 

Teachers will learn how using inquiry-based science activities in the curriculum can help prevent type-2 diabetes and promote science

and health careers. Based on current science and traditional wisdom, this program provides engaging curriculum content for

improving nutritional choices and activity levels of all students. All participants will be treated to a traditional Native American feast

for lunch prepared by Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Leaders.  Limited to 30 participants.
