During
the morning, teachers will investigate the physical characteristics of streams
and how slope, velocity, and streamside land uses can impact the water quality
of streams. In the afternoon, teachers will explore the role of bacteria and
microorganisms in aquatic ecosystems with MTU’s Dr. Sue Bagley, and learn how
to test for microorganisms in water. Lastly, teachers will visit a wastewater
treatment plant with MTU’s Dr. Marty Auer and determine
whether the discharged wastewater really is “clean?” Topics will connect
to Life Science, Geosphere and Hydrosphere benchmarks.
This session will focus on providing a framework for
guiding "inquiry-based learning" to young learners, while making
connections between the classroom and the winter wonderland we are surrounded
by. Come prepared to venture outdoors
on snowshoes provided by us (or bring your own) as we explore snow and how
various plants and animals survive the winter.
The all-day workshop will be closely connected to the Michigan
