Environmental
& Field Science Workshop for K-12 Educators
This 1-1/2 day multi-disciplinary
workshop for K-12 teachers and youth leaders is held the first Friday-Saturday
of May each year. The workshop location alternates between the eastern
half of the Upper Peninsula (on odd years) and the western half of the
Upper Peninsula (on even years). In the eastern U.P. the workshop is
held at Clear Lake Education Center on the Hiawatha National Forest
(near Shingleton, Michigan); in the western U.P. the workshop is held
at either Michigan Technological University's Ford Forestry Center near
L'Anse, or Camp Nesbit on the Ottawa National Forest (near Sidnaw, Michigan).
The Teaching With the Outdoors
workshop offers
presentations and workshops on a wide variety of
topics, that are conducted by educators, scientists,
university faculty and resource specialists. The
Teaching With the Outdoors Workshop is for both less
experienced and more experienced K-12 teachers and
educators, with an emphasis on hands-on teaching
methods, activities, and information that will assist
them in meeting Michigan Content Standards and
Benchmarks.
Teachers have the option
to take the workshop for
credit through Michigan Technological University (1.0
ED 5540 credit) or through Northern Michigan
University (1.0 ED 989 credit), if they attend in the
entire workshop.
Registration is $65 ($35
for university students).
Registration includes lunch and dinner on Friday, as
well as breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Some
sessions require an additional fee for teacher kits and
activity guides. Teachers should ask their school or
intermediate school district (ISD) about the availability
of Eisenhower funds to cover registration, substitute
fees, and travel.
