Family Outdoor Adventures Weekend
Bring your family and join hosts Chris and Courtney Hohnholt and their three daughters on a hike of the Swedetown Gorge at the Maasto Hiihto Trails in Hancock from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14. The outing will begin at the chalet near the Houghton County Fairgrounds.
This is a opportunity to be outdoors and enjoy a leisurely hike with others. Children will have the opportunity to make nature journals using recycled materials.
Joan Chadde, representing the Western UP Center for Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education, will bring a first-aid kit, binoculars, a variety of ID books, magnifiers, and pencils and supplies for the nature journals.
Come prepared by bringing a water bottle and wear good waterproof walking
shoes. Dress warmly and bring hat/gloves, an extra layer of warm clothing and rain gear.
Directions: From US-41, turn onto Ethel Ave. Take a left onto Ingot Street (The Keweenaw Co-op is on the corner of Ethel and Ingot). The Houghton County Fairground is at the end of Ingot. Drive past the arena to the Maasto Hiihto trailhead and chalet. A map can be found at: http://www.keweenawtrails.com/trails/maasto.html .
Call 487-3341 if you plan to attend or have any questions, or contact Chadde at email@example.com, or Michelle Miller at firstname.lastname@example.org .
Other outdoor adventures like this will occur on the third Saturday of each month throughout the year. (The November outing is on the second Saturday because of hunting season.) Each hike will be on trails featured in the guide, "Walking Paths and Protected Areas of the Keweenaw," and will be hosted by a local family, a sanctuary steward and a representative of the Western UP Center.
